Recent Surprising Drunk Driving Arrests
If one of your pastimes is following celebrity, entertainment and/or sports news then you probably realize that there has been a rash of DUI arrests of famous (and infamous) persons over the last few months. There are two reasons this is important. First, it adds credence to the adage "it can happen to anybody (or there but for the grace of God go I)" thereby reaffirming to our own satisfaction that no one is outside the boundaries of the law. Too, there may be no truer saying than 'misery loves company' and if you are 'sitting on' a DUI or DWI charge it brings a small sense of satisfaction to know that there are others sharing your 'pain'. Consider the following DUI arrests involving persons of notoriety and renown.
*Hines Ward – winner of the 2011 Dancing with the Stars show and wide-receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers was arrested and charged with suspected intoxicated driving. According to the police, Ward cooperated fully and answered all questions truthfully. First indications are that Ward himself expects to be acquitted of any charges but he has apologized to his many fans and employer for any embarrassment he may have caused from this incident.
*Jaime Pressly of My Name is Earl fame as well as other acting credits was arrested after a traffic stop that found her initial BAC to be nearly 3 times the legal limit. She ended up spending the night in jail and was required to post a hefty bond of $15,000. Her mug shot did not do the gorgeous actress justice – but then mug shots are not supposed to be flattering. She pleaded not guilty.
*Miguel Cabrera, who plays for the Detroit Tigers, was arrested one night during training camp and video of the stop as well as eyewitness reports provide an account of the events that left many involved very unsettled. In addition, there is a video of the arrest and a 41 page report that details the behavior of a person who clearly seemed intoxicated. The matter is still pending.
If you are shocked by these arrests then you will certainly be astounded at the list of politicians across the country that has been charged with intoxicated driving among other things. The list is a veritable 'Who's Who?' of statesmen from nearly every state in the country. What follows is a sampling of these individuals.
*A 38 year old Senator from Idaho and recent 'Republican Legislator of the Year' was arrested for suspected driving under the influence. A fellow legislator from Pennsylvania found himself in similar circumstances weeks before. Finally, a nationally recognized U.S. representative of the same state also found himself arrested on DUI charges less than 4 weeks ago.
Drinking and driving is a hot-bed, controversial issue that thousands and thousands of people face every year. If you find yourself arrested for drinking and driving charges – consider yourself in 'good company' with those who may have more financial reserves – but equally challenging positions.
